13th Tokyo International Film FestivalOctober28-November5,2000

In this the last year of the 20th century, TIFF attempted to provide an overview of the past century through film. "Nippon Cinema Classics" presented "Document 20th Century", showing prominent feature-length documentaries made after WWII.

At "International Video Image Symposium" under the Digital Nouvelle Vague theme, "making of" videos of Mamoru Oshii's "Avalon" and Lars von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark" were shown. Festival audiences and participants in particular discussed in detail the Dogma 95 movement pushed forth by von Trier and other Danish directors, which was made possible through innovations in digital technologies and miniaturization of filming equipment.
